I prefer a restructuring and improving the US's public transportation systems. Heck, our rail system is a throwback from the early days. Compared to European and Asian rail systems, ours is obsolete. So yes, a mass transit system that can lessen our "car driving culture" is the one I would love to have.

Oh .. and here's a research by Tennessee Center for Policy about our venerable internet inventor and global warming magnate

You know I wont argue your point. Just a couple to add, there are ways of making synthetic fuel (biofuels are one of them). I do agree that we need to reduce our dependency on FOREIGN OIL, but that does not mean we need to stop using it, we will never be fully oil independent and it would be stupid to try. Also, who actually pays for the R&D done by the car companies? We will, that is a large driver in the cost of cars. How do you think they will get the extra mileage? They are going to make cars lighter, the cheap way: using thinner weaker materials (not good), the expensive way: exotic materials and construction (expensive, obviously).

I could go on, but just wont.

A link with something to think about (I sent this to you the other day, I hope you wont mind me putting it up here)
